Finish What You Start

One of the greatest things a person could ever do for themselves is keeping the promises they make to themselves. Closely aligned with that is deciding to finish what we start as a way of life.
Getting to that point sometimes means being very careful about the things we start to begin with.
I have gone a little overboard sometimes in the past where I would e.g. drag myself through a movie where I was a little distracted by the end, all in the name of developing the necessary mind-set that would be needed to finish when it came to the things that really mattered. It later made sense to rather opt for ‘high-value’ activities where I would only start something if I knew I would learn something new or it would add to the kind of person I am consciously trying to become.
Few things, I believe, are as fulfilling as completing a task. Getting to that finish line is a moment that you are able to bookmark and look back on whenever you feel that you might not be capable of achieving a seemingly insurmountable goal. Not only that, it often reveals strengths and capabilities you never knew you had because no circumstance had ever demanded that you search for those within you before.
Although the curveballs and obstacles we sometimes come across while venturing on the different pursuits we commit to are not always within our control, carrying a vision through to the end is in our hands. You might take longer than the average person to finish that degree, or complete that 10km run but what matters most is that you get to the end – you achieve that goal.
On a deeper level, leaving things undone / incomplete is usually a sign of an ‘abortive spirit’ that needs to be prayed about and dealt with. I don’t know about you, but when I first learnt about it I panicked, okay. However, remembering that there is nothing prayer and a determined mind-set cannot help us break through shifted things in a major way.
As people we sometimes take for granted the number of things we ‘start’ and later ‘drop’ because we lost interest or because things got a little difficult. If you find that you do that sometimes and yet hope that God will trust with you more, I hope you’ll take this opportunity to look back and take inventory of the times you, like many of us, have done this. Thereafter I hope you will decide (or re-commit) today to being a person who follows through until the very end, unless you have distinctly heard God direct you towards something else.
Life happens sometimes, but it is better for it to ‘happen’ while we know in our heart of hearts that we hadn’t abandoned any worthwhile pursuits without giving them everything we had first.
Have a productive day and enjoy the week!
