A thank you note

One of the things I am most passionate about is the idea of people living up to their potential and becoming the highest version of themselves while still on this earth.
I haven’t always gotten it right either, so trust that it is never too late to start.
I want to look back someday and say I did all that I could; I left no stone unturned unless God told me ‘no’. I want to die empty. I desire for others to die empty too. This always finds a way into my thoughts, dreams and conversation.
For this reason, I want to take a moment to just appreciate the people who pursue purpose wholeheartedly. Thank you to those reading this, and those who might never see it. Because it is women’s month, I will focus mainly on women for this post.
Thank you to the women who walked up to the Union Buildings on Aug 9, 1956 for the sake of women who now live in the kind of freedom that was but a dream for them at the time when they took action.
Thank you to our mothers that have faced what seemed like insurmountable odds so that we could have better opportunities to pursue our own dreams and purpose, though some never fully got to live out their own.
Thank you to the women of our generation that decided that they wouldn’t take the label of a ‘confused generation’ and, instead, became trailblazers in their own right.
Thank you to the Esther’s of past and present generations that made it their duty to cement themselves in spaces that were never supposed to belong to us on the basis of race, gender and socio-economic status.
Thank you to those who are reading this who don’t feel as though they are where they ought to be quite yet, but made the decision to do one thing every single day that will bring them closer to the people they are meant to be.
Thank you to those who give of their time, gifts, finances and other things to ensure that others too are able to realise their purpose and potential. Your efforts will never go unnoticed – even when it might not feel like it in the moment.
Because of those who have done the above and more, many more women (young and old) are implicitly given permission to do the same. By being exposed to what seemed far-fetched previously, many realise that their dreams too are within reach.
Today, we honour and salute those that have played their part, and continue to do so.
To those who feel they have yet to catch the baton from those who went before them, I challenge you to do so today. Don’t let their efforts go to waste. Don’t let the life that your Creator has given you go to waste either.
