A Call to Serve

Everyone one of us can be great because everyone of us can serve. I like how the barriers to entry into the arena of ‘greatness’ are almost brought to nil by this thought or saying.
Anyone can start a business, break into academia, make life-changing music or slay every client’s face beat but it takes a special heart to do it all from a place of wanting to serve. Some might wonder why they should serve others when there’s so much they could be doing to serve themselves instead. Here are a few reasons why we should (continue to) do all things from a place of wanting to serve:
1. Serving boosts your self-esteem
If we won’t do it for any other reason, we might as well do it because it is a good way to raise our own self-esteem. When we do good for others and see that it put a smile on their face or improved their life in some way, your inner-person generally swells with joy too. You feel there is hope because you were able to give hope. Even when an effort hasn’t been met with the anticipated response, you can still find joy in the fact that you were part of a solution and that you had it in you to go beyond yourself for the sake of other people.
2. Anticipating the words ‘Well done, good and faithful servant’
Whether we are going to live long or shorter lives on this earth, we all have the same ultimate destiny. At the end of our lives, Jesus won’t recognise us and applaud us on our academic achievements or wealth attained. Yes, we should strive to do our best, but we should do it knowing that God is assessing whether we are good and faithful servants above all else. Doing this allows us to get a greater honour than earthly approval – one that will echo in eternity.
3. Seeds sown are future harvests
Seeds sown today will always show up in our future. The harvest might not show up when or how we might expect it to, but it will (whether in your life or for future generations that will come from you). This is a principle we can all be sure of regardless of what belief system we subscribe to.
4. You get to be part of making the world a better place
Wouldn’t you like to be a part of this?
5. Reflecting our Creator
God gives more than He takes from us. You alone know the depths of His goodness in your own life. If we seek to become like Him, we ought to serve others just as He continues to do the best for us.
Change will always start with us. The choice also lies with us. I think impact that echoes in eternity sounds pretty appealing; I hope you think so too.
